The Joy of Mindful Cooking is a recipe-sharing project inspired by a talk on livestock and global warming, given by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 2007. Our goal is to help each other explore the new territory of plant-based eating by sharing our recipe discoveries, ideas, questions and inspiration along the way. We are an online community of more than 200 people in 15 countries.

Portland, Oregon is our home base and we have a potluck here every season. In honor of our Buddhist origins, we read the Five Contemplations before eating, which include: “May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that reduces the suffering of living beings, stops contributing to climate change, and heals and preserves our precious planet.” While we enjoy our plant-based feast, we also enjoy a wide-ranging conversation about our evolving experiences with food.
